It is so cute that he is nervous...

Angelina continued walking up the staircase, wondering silently what she and Tristoy should converse about. After a few moments she paused in her walking and turned to face her friend.

"Well, I have absolutely no idea," she concluded. "What would you like to talk about? Surely you could think of something?"

She started walking again as the sly smile reappeared. She was teasing him and she knew it. Angelina positively loved to tease boys like this. She couldn't help it. Boys always seemed to get oddly nervous around her and she liked making it worse, then suddenly better a few minutes later.

However, she waited quietly for Tristoy's response.

Tristoy rubbed the back of his neck nervously. He couldn't think of a damned thing to talk about! Again, Lady Fate was being cruel to him. He silently cursed himself for being so horrible at this kind of thing.

"To be honest, I don't know what to talk about either," he said after a moment. The best thing he could go with at the moment was the truth. "I asked you in hopes of saving myself from embarrassment, but Fate would not have it so."

Suddenly he stopped in his tracks. Did he just do what he think he did? He re-said the statement in his mind and mentally slapped himself. Already, only after a day, he was beginning to speak more and more like Angelina.

"Sorry," he continued. "When I meet people I start talking in their lingo. Kind of a weird and stupid habit, but, well, that's what it is."

Angelina laughed a soft, silky laugh and her voice reverberated off the walls in an eerie manner.

"Believe me, it is completely fine," she replied with a smile. "I do not mind one bit. But why should it be a bad habit? There are some people who would very much like it if they met a new person who made an attempt to speak in their 'lingo' as you call it. Besides, I find it quite amusing.

"Anyways, Lady Fate is being unkind to you, is she? She and I are wonderful friends, I admit. However, as she is only a figment of our imaginations, she cannot really control us, can she? I do not believe I have ever left myself in the hands of Lady Fate. Although we get along, and sometimes have tea together, I would much rather lead my own life and my own destiny. Do you not feel the same way?"

She gazed intently at Tristoy as she ascended each step. Her moth colored dress made her fade in and out of reality much more often than was needed. Even she, who knew herself better than anyone else, was mildly afraid that Tristoy would not be able to see her clearly. The torches lined across the stone walls could play tricks upon the brain.

Angelina smiled contentedly and let the worrying thoughts drift out of her mind. Why did she have to worry about something like that? If Tristoy could not see her then he would more than likely inform her. So, she had nothing to fret about.

Tristoy rubbed his eyes. They seemed to be playing tricks on him. Angelina kept disappearing and reappearing oddly in the light. That mothy dress was what was doing it, he supposed. He shrugged off this irregularity and tried to think of a response.

Trouble was, he couldn't think of a damned thing to say. Angelina's words perplexed him so much that his brain was completely empty of words. Was the girl crazy? No, that couldn't be it. And yet she talked about Lady Fate as though she were a real person, and then contradicted herself by saying she was only part of their imagination. As he listened further he realized that she was asking him a question.

"Well, I have to say that I agree with you entirely," he answered, still trying to stop himself from speaking like her. "I wouldn't like my destiny in the hands of someone else, although I believe that it would be a lot easier to deal with life if you didn't know what was intended for you. But, then again, I see what you mean. Being able to control your own life does sound appealing. I mean, if you really do know what's intended for you, you'd be able to alter it in your favor. How wonderful would that be? I could change the outcome of this meeting entirely. However, that wouldn't be your wish, would it?"

"If you were to change this situation to be in your favor, I could retort with moving it to be in my favor. If both of us were in control of the situation at the same time, then there might possibly be no outcome at all. We would probably continue this way forever. Think about it. You would start by making something happen to your liking, while in the meantime, after you got your result, I could change that result to something in my liking. Both of us would end up getting what we want, only to find out right after that the other has all the control.

"This is why we leave all of our decisions in the hands of 'Lady Fate'. She is only a part of our subconscious, which means that we still have our own destiny in our hands even if we are not aware of it. This makes life easier to deal with. Since we still control what we do and how we deal with it, we still have control over our own lives. However, since we are unaware that we are controlling it, it does us no harm.

"Do you comprehend what I am saying?"

[Tristoy Sphynx]

"Yes, I get what you're saying," Tristoy replied. This girl was much more interesting than he originally thought! "But, if you're conscious that you're in control of your own life, and know that in your subconscious 'Lady Fate' presides, then isn't life that much harder? You have to deal with a lot of things at once, and I fear that the brain can only take so much at one time.

"I mean, it seems to me as though you're very conscious of what goes on in your mind, and in both consciouses. Doesn't that delete your subconscious altogether if you're so aware of what goes on inside it? There can't be a way for you to have two consciouses as well as a subconscious. If that was so, wouldn't both your consciouses be aware of the subconscious?

"Oh, goodness, it's all so confusing!"

Tristoy shook his head and rubbed his eyes again. This conversation was not going at all how he planned. He only wished to talk about normal things, like school and friends and whatnot. However, even as he thought this it brought him back to the reality at hand. If what Angelina said was true, wasn't it happening at this very moment?

Angelina chuckled and reached out to place her hand on Tristoy's shoulder.

"Do not worry about it, Tristoy," she replied with a smile. "I only have one conscious and one subconscious. And even though I am fully aware of what goes on in both, I do not fret about it often. The conversation seemed to pop up in reply to your mention of Lady Fate. I must say it has been interesting. I have never met someone quite like you, Tristoy. You are very kind and intelligent, which are two things I admire highly in men."

She paused for a moment, letting her words take effect in Tristoy's overworked mind. In reality, she really was beginning to like him more and more. But, she wasn't about to let it carry her away. She was one girl that had to be chased in order to catch.

"Anyways, let us speak of a different subject. I daresay that this topic is much more than our brains can handle. What would you like to talk about? Unless you would prefer me to pick something?"

Tristoy looked ghostly in the strange light as he turned his head and looked at Angelina. His brain was in over drive when she complimented him. She really thought he was a good person? He couldn't make himself believe it, and instead became completely bashful as he hid his face once more.

"Thanks," he mumbled. "I'd much rather you pick a subject. You're very interesting and I can't think of a thing to say. My brain is too preoccupied with what we just talked about."

He felt her slender hand on his shoulder and his heart seemed to melt with happiness it was beating so fast. Sooner or later, if this girl didn't watc herself, he was going to get a heart attack. And that wouldn't be a good thing, now would it?
