Ren quickly opened his mouth again, his intention to make up for his idiocy with some sort of apology or maybe just smalltalk, anything to get rid of the feeling that he had probably just ruined any sort of small relationship they might have gained in the short time they had known each other.
Then he looked up furtively at Lilly's face, daring a glance at the inevitable...and she turned around...
And she threw her arms around him.
He felt like time had stopped for a brief, blessed moment of time, and the only thing he could seem to notice was the thundering pounding of his heart, then the moment passed, and he heard her whisper a small thanks. He brought his arms up to give her a small, reassuring squeeze, and replied, "Not a problem."
Then, after several moments, she turned and continued walking, slower, more relaxed. He stood there for a moment, a great big silly grin growing on his face. It truly was a wonderful feeling to make a difference, to see that something he had done had brought a little cheer into her morbid expression, a little light into her darkened life.
Then he followed her, his hands clasped behind his head, breathing deeply. It had been a good day. A good day. He smiled again, this one a small, private smile. Days like this didn't come all the time. He would be sure that it didn't get away from him.

Lilly stopped at the edge of the forest and looked up into the evening sky. Darkness was already descending over the castle grounds, and she knew that curfew was coming. She continued walking along the grass, doing her best to get rid of the cuts and bruises covering her skin, but to no avail.
"God, I'm so bored," she said aloud. "You would think that there would be a world of possibilities in a magic school, but with all the restrictions they put on us we never get a wink of excitement."
With each step Lilly took, her boredom grew. So instead she started to hum little tunes to herself in an attempt to make it all go away. She even started skipping, which was something she didn't do normally. But, strangeness was one of her more notable traits.

Ren walked alongside Lilly, noticing as they walked the clumping of the smaller trees near the edge of the forest that fringed the Hogwarts grounds. He smiled, wonderment and glee in that simple gesture. She really did know the forest. She hardly even hesitated as she guided him through the maze of trees. He knew for a fact that he wouldn't have been able to tell one direction from another in there. She really was quite remarkable.
As they broke free of the enclosing trees and stepped their first step back onto Hogwarts grounds, he let forth a small sigh.
Lilly made him chuckle a little with her comment about how bored she was. "Bored, eh? We just went to the heart of the Forbidden Forest and back, and you're bored. If I told any of my friends about that they might have a heart attack." He frowned slightly. "Although technically, we weren't allowed to do that...But they do have the rules for a reason, since they're responsible for us. Nevertheless, I agree with you that everyday life is quite dull..."
He trailed off, shaking his head bemusedly as she suddenly began to skip and hum. She definitely was strange, but he liked her anyway. He enjoyed strangeness. It was very refreshing. He resisted the urge to skip along with her, and remained walking, preferring to retain at least a small bit of dignified manliness for the night.
All the while, the looming figure of the Hogwarts castle against the evening sky drew ever-closer as they hurried to reach the school building before curfew.

"Who cares if we weren't allowed to do that?" Lilly asked as she started to walk backwards. "I mean, you can't be a goody two shoes all the time. You'd be the most boring kid on earth. No one wants that. I like to break the rules sometimes. Although, what can I say? I'm a rebel at heart."
She gave Ren a fake innocent smile, spun around a few times, and started running towards the castle entrance. Every few seconds she turned her head and looked back at Ren, a wide smile upon her face.
"I'm going to beat you!" she shouted.
Once she reached the front gates she pushed open the doors and stepped inside, not even bothering to wait for Ren. That was another thing about Lilly; she never waited for people unless she absolutely had to.

"Yeah, I suppose you're right. You can't always follow the rules. Some of them are just made to be broken. Besides, we knew what we were doing...well, you did anyway. I guess knowing the Forbidden Forest well comes with the whole rebel gig. Knowing people like you makes me wish I could be more of a rebel sometimes too. Maybe then I'd actually have a bit of excitement in this dull environment..."
He laughed, watching her "innocent" smile, and grinning back as she took off running.
He took off running after her, and replied to her taunting as she turned around with a teasing smile on her face, "Oh no, you aren't going to beat me!"
He chased her all the way to the front gates, laughing all the way. She flung the doors open and didn't look back to see if he was following. He slipped inside behind her, and said softly, "Didn't beat me by much."
