Lilly grinned mischievously.
"I don't need to chase you," she said, floating lazily in the water as her eyes traveled across the surface. "I have the Black Lake on my side."
She straightened her body and used her legs to keep her head above the surface, watching Ren swim away. She locked her gaze on him, raised her arms above her head, then swung them straight down in front of her.
A huge gusto of water formed a wave that followed Ren. Lilly's body was surrounded by a brilliant white glow. Her hair suddenly had a realistic liquid quality to it. The wave, which was fairly large, managed to reach Ren, but before she could see if it got him, the glow faded and she fainted.
Lilly's body was now completely limp. The weight of clothes dragged her down under the surface of the water to the sandy floor below. Bubbles floated up as her last bit of breath was exhaled. The water slowly began to filter its way through her body.
She was slowly dying.

Ren heard Lilly's mischievous-sounding voice behind him in the distance, and kept swimming, smiling, unheeding. He wasn't swimming very fast; he wouldn't mind much if she caught him. Besides, he didn't want to tire himself out swimming with his clothes on if he didn't have to. He was a fairly good swimmer, but still, no need to exert himself...
Suddenly, the next thing he knew, there was a great wave curling and crashing...headed straight for where he was swimming. He looked up, his mouth hanging slightly open, and had time for a small gulp, then he quickly breathed in just before the wave crashed on him, driving him across the lake as well as down under the water. If he had had the time to scowl underwater, he would have, just before he began kicking strongly for the surface. He resurfaced, spluttering, a bit indignant at having been thrown about by a (surprisingly powerful) wave of water summoned presumably by Lilly. But his glare was met by emptiness. And suddenly the indignant feeling changed to the cold, tight grasp of fear.
Without pausing, he inhaled deeply, and propelled himself back under the water, panning frantically left and right, with his eyes open, ignoring the sting of the water. Then he saw the limp, dark floating form, and his heart gave a lurch. He had never swam as quickly or as desperately as he did at that moment. He reached her body, wrapped his right arm around her waist, kicked her water-laden shoes off of her feet, and propelled them both upwards with strong, rhythmic pushes of his legs and his left arm. He had been underwater a long time, and his lungs were burning, but he didn't let up the rhythm of swimming upwards toward the light, the air. His eyes were just beginning to swim with small explosions of light and dark when they broke the surface, and he took in a greedy, ragged gulp of air as his eyes cleared and the fog was removed off his brain.
He looked fearfully at Lilly's pallid, unmoving face, and struck off for the shore as fast as he could. He dragged her up onto the ground, throwing himself down on the ground next to her. He looked around, searching for help of any kind, but there was nobody there. He didn't know what to do. "Oh god, please let this work," he whispered fervently as he decided to begin administering CPR as best he could. He had learned how to do it from his father, who had been a nurse. He concentrated on the mechanical movements, the pushing on her unmoving, cold body, the seemingly useless breaths which he tried to force into her unmoving lungs. Silent tears leaked out his eyes as he did this. 'Please,' he thought, numbly. 'Please don't let her die...'

Lilly's eyes were shut tight as she slowly came back to consciousness. Leaning over to her side she coughed up water and gasped for air. Her eyes were decked with tears as more water made its way out of her body. When she calmed down enough to take a deep breath, she put her hand to her mouth and with slow motions made the rest of the water come out without making her gag.
"Oh my God," Lilly gasped, clutching her chest fearfully. "What in holy hell just happened?"
She looked wide eyed at Ren, who she noticed had tears trickling down his face. Immediately her question was answered and she threw her arms around his cold body. Her heart was beating a mile a minute as she realized how serious the situation was.
"Oh God, I'm so sorry Ren," she sobbed. "I'm so, so sorry! I can't believe I did that to you--oh God--I'm sorry."
